What you can Do to Help
Friends of Khorasan can help the children of Afghanistan by raising awareness of their suffering and assist those who are trying to improve their situation. Khorasan can only do its good work with the continued generosity of their friends who donate money to house, feed, clothe and educate children who are in desperate need. Khorasan’s carers provide love, kindness and necessary discipline to assist the children to grow in to well-rounded and considerate adults. But they cannot do this without your help. Please continue to support Khorasan – Afghanistan’s children need you.
Finding current reliable statistics on children in Afghanistan is a difficult task, for example the latest official estimates of street children who are working number around 37,000 and this was in 2004! Aschiana, an NGO well respected for its work with these children believe that the number is more likely 50,000 nowadays, the increase due to lack of job opportunities for adults and the extreme poverty in the capital. The country as a whole is ranked number 173 out of 178 on the UNDP Human Development Index meaning that 70% of people subsist on under $2 a day. Likewise, finding reliable data on orphans is hard and many believe that even if children are off the streets and in orphanages that the care they receive in some of them is far from adequate and in some cases could constitute abuse. Anecdotal reports show that some orphans are not only physically and orally abused but that they have little protection under the law in practice. Every day children in Afghanistan face innumerable problems. Not only are they lucky if they have survived past their 5th birthday, there are daily hazards that they must try to avoid. There is a growing problem of drug addiction, boys are still being recruited as soldiers and girls sold or exchanged in marriage before puberty. There are concerns that children’s voices are not heard if they are victims of crime e.g. rape. Education for children in Afghanistan is not only a challenge but in many parts of the country carries with it the risk of injury or death, if not to them, to their teachers or parents. Smuggling of children is also a continuing problem due to a lucrative trade in human organs and slavery. Securing Afghanistan’s future? – If we are going to achieve this aim then we need to do more for the children now – they are the future. Please help us - you can make a regular payment or even a one off donation by any of the methods shown below. Khorasan is a small charity that cares for children in Afghanistan whose parents are either dead or who have no means of looking after them. Before being cared for by Khorasan, all the children had suffered loss of relatives, their homes and security. You can help the children too by:- · Sending a donation · Sponsoring a child · Making a regular contribution by direct debit · Local fundraising on Khorasan’s behalf All the children in the orphanage have experienced trauma before they arrived – some even saw their parents being killed. Khorasan provides the love and sensitive care needed to help them as well as food, shelter, education and recreation.
